Choosing your first American mahjong set can be confusing because the most visible details are usually the pattern and the carrying bag.
The details that affect play are easier to miss. Before buying, check the version of mahjong, tile size, readability, tile count, material, weight, and included accessories.
A good beginner set should make the game easier to learn and remain comfortable after the first few lessons.
Start with the right version of mahjong
American mahjong is not played with exactly the same equipment as every other version of the game.
American sets include Jokers and usually place Arabic numbers or English letters on the tiles to make them easier to identify. Players also use a rules card that changes each year. The National Mah Jongg League publishes the American rules and annual card.
Before comparing colors or cases, confirm that the set is designed for American mahjong. A beautiful set for another version may not include the tiles your group expects.
Make readability a priority
Beginners spend a lot of time looking from the card to the rack and then across the table. Clear numbers, strong color contrast, and comfortable tile dimensions make that process easier.
Very small travel tiles can save space, but they can also be harder to read and handle. If you expect to play regularly, full size tiles are usually the safer choice.

Check the tile count and accessories
American mahjong sets contain the standard suits, Winds, Dragons, Flowers, and Jokers. Many sellers also include extra Jokers or blank replacement tiles, so the total count can vary.
The Beach Set contains 160 tiles in total. That includes 144 standard playing tiles, 10 Jokers, and 6 blanks.
It is a tiles only set. Racks, a mat, a playing card, and a carrying bag are not included. That can be a good fit if you already have accessories or want to choose them separately, but a new player should know what still needs to be purchased.
Lightweight should still feel firm
A lighter tile will feel different from acrylic or melamine. That does not automatically make it flimsy or lower in quality.
Material and construction matter. Our tiles are made from rigid PLA, a bio based plastic derived from renewable plant resources. They are firm rather than foam, and they produce a clear, satisfying click when shuffled and played.
The Beach Set weighs approximately 1.6 pounds for the tiles only. The lower weight is intentional. It makes the set easier to carry without making the tile faces smaller.

Choose for where you will actually play
If the set will stay in one room, a heavier complete kit with racks and a case may be convenient. If it will move between lessons, clubhouses, vacation homes, and friends’ tables, weight and packability matter more.
Beginners do not need the most elaborate set. They need one they can read clearly, handle comfortably, and bring to the next game without hesitation.
