An American mahjong game uses 152 tiles. Many sets are sold with 160, 166, or another total, which is why answers online can look inconsistent.
The difference is usually extra Jokers, blank replacement tiles, or bonus Flowers. A higher number on the box does not mean every tile belongs in the standard wall.
What is included in the 152 tile American mahjong set?
The playing set breaks down like this:
- 108 suit tiles, with 36 Dots, 36 Bams, and 36 Craks
- 16 Wind tiles, with four each of East, South, West, and North
- 12 Dragon tiles, with four each of Red, Green, and White
- 8 Flower tiles
- 8 Joker tiles
The first four groups total 144 tiles. Add eight Jokers and you reach 152.
The American Mah Jongg Association glossary identifies eight Flowers and eight Jokers as required parts of an American set. These additions are one reason a set made for another version of mahjong may not work for American play.

Why do some American mahjong sets have 160 tiles?
Set makers often include spare pieces. That is why a complete retail set may contain more than the 152 tiles used in a standard game.
Our Beach Set contains 160 tiles. It includes 144 standard playing tiles, 10 Jokers, and 6 blanks.
To prepare the standard wall, use the 144 playing tiles and eight of the Jokers. The two additional Jokers and six blank tiles remain outside the game as spares.

What are blank mahjong tiles for?
Blank tiles are normally kept outside the 152 tile wall. If a tile is lost or damaged, a blank can be marked to replace the missing piece.
Extra Jokers provide the same practical backup. They do not change the standard game just because they came in the box.
This is useful for a set that moves between homes, clubs, and trips. A spare tile can keep one missing piece from making the rest of the set difficult to use.
What should you check before buying a set?
Tile count is the first check, but it is not the only one. Confirm that the set is made for American mahjong and includes at least eight Flowers and eight Jokers.
Then look at the tile dimensions, readability, material, weight, and included accessories. Our guide to choosing an American mahjong set for beginners explains each of these points.
If the set will travel, check whether portability comes from lighter construction or smaller tiles. Our American mahjong travel set guide explains why that difference matters.
The short answer is 152 tiles are used in a standard American game. A 160 tile set can still be exactly right when it contains the complete 152 plus clearly identified spares.
