Standard American mahjong requires eight Jokers and eight Flowers. You will also need the current annual card, four racks, and two dice. Many Chinese sets do not include American style Jokers, so an older or inherited set may need to be adapted before it is ready for American play.

The Missing Piece Is Usually the Jokers
The National Mah Jongg League identifies the annual card, the Charleston, and Jokers as key features of American play. The American Mah Jongg Association beginner guide specifies a 152 tile set with eight Jokers and notes that extra tiles may be converted using Joker decals.
If your set has eight suitable blank or spare tiles, you can label them clearly and use them as Jokers. Every player must be able to identify them immediately. Unmarked blanks should not quietly stand in for Jokers because that creates avoidable confusion during play.
Arabic Numbers Are Helpful but Not Required
American mahjong tiles often place Arabic numbers and letters in the corners. These markings help players identify Craks, Winds, and Dragons without reading Chinese characters.
The labels do not change the rules. A group that already recognizes the traditional symbols can use unlabeled tiles. For beginners, however, clear markings remove one more thing to translate while learning the card, the Charleston, exposures, and Joker rules.
The Card and Accessories Are Separate
Even a complete tile set does not replace the current American mahjong card. The winning hands change each year, so each player should have access to the current card used by the group.
Racks and dice also need to be checked separately. Racks keep each hand organized and support the walls used in standard American play. They are not automatically included with every tiles only set.
When an American Set Is the Easier Choice
Adapting an existing set makes sense when you already own one you enjoy and it has enough spare tiles to create eight clear Jokers. Buying an American set is simpler when you are starting a new group, want beginner friendly markings, or do not want to piece together the required tile count.

Before buying anything, count what is already in your case. If the standard suits and honors are complete and you can create eight unmistakable Jokers, your Chinese set may be workable. If not, choose an American set that clearly lists its tile mix and included accessories.
